Studio kickstart is given by prof. Aref Maksoud Architecture in digital age lecture, which gave the student an overview on the connections between the digital realm and contemporary architecture. In the following days, studio work was alternated by lectures (in[form]ation by prof. Alessio Erioli and parametric design – the building process by arch. Francesco Ducato – Stardust*) and design-focused tutorial on the use of Autodesk’s 3DStudio MAX as a design platform. Students prepared moodboards and presentations to communicate their design intent, explorations and projects. Table critics for each group were given each day during this workshop session.

_ Digital Architecture – prof. Aref Maksoud (MAG LAB – Barcelona –Spain/Damascus – Syria)

The lecture gives an overview of the relations between architecture and the digital realm and its recent developments, ranging from the basic theoretical ground to digital fabrication, showing historical precedents, tendencies and design approaches.

_ in[form]ation – prof. Alessio Erioli – Università di Bologna – Co-de-iT

What is the role of information in the natural and digital realm? This is the starting topic of the lecture, which then orbits artound coded and embedded information and their role in systems, with a more in depth focus on morphogenesis, tackling the concepts of virtuality, topology and elegance.

_ Parametric Design – the building processFrancesco Ducato ( Stardust* -Spain, Italy, Brazil, USA)

Francesco Ducato is the head of Stardust*. He collaborated with Cloud9 in the design and realization of the MEDIATIC building in @22 in Barcelona. The design and building process, involving parametric design for construction and the different solutions for energy saving and light control were extensively illustrated and discussed.

Tutorials were specifically tailored for information-based approach on the design: rather than modeling a final shape, the aim of the studio is to foster the construction of systems based on geometry and capable of differentiation through parametric variation. The process of local adaptation is then implemented through the system ability to change according to external information (geometry, maps, data, etc.).
